why i travel solo
Almost 3 years ago, I took the plunge into solo travel. It was one of the best decisions of my life. I've been to London, new orleans, chicago, amsterdam, berlin, prague, lisbon and most recently, paris, on my own. Mexico City and Rome are up next in the first half of 2018.
If you asked me 10 years ago if I ever saw myself traveling solo around the world, I would have said that I could never do such a thing. but I can and I did. I know many people feel the same way because they tell me so--that they just aren't that brave or like themselves enough to go it on their own.
I was scared, too. Fear has kept me from doing a lot of things in my life. but the desire to go explore was stronger than any fears I had. And I didn't want to wait around for someone else's schedule or budget to align with mine. so I went on that first trip and I haven't looked back.
I'm not going to tell you that just because I did it, you can too. I find those articles annoying and patronizing. but I do want to encourage those of you who dream of traveling but are not quite ready yet. Start small. You don't have to go to another continent, maybe it's just a city a few hours away. Take baby steps. I knew I was ready after I made some solo excursions on travels the previous year. Those opportunities helped me realize that I had it in me.
below are the top 3 reasons why I travel solo. I hope they inspire you to travel solo at least once in your life.
to build confidence
Traveling solo is one of the best confidence-builders I've found. the feeling of successfully navigating an unfamiliar place on your own is empowering and leaves you feeling like you can conquer anything that comes your way. whether it's interacting with locals in a language you can't speak or trying to make sure you don't get lost on your way from point A to point B, you emerge a stronger, more confident individual from solo travel that extends into your everyday life.
for the independence
the best part about traveling solo? You get to do exactly what you want. No one there to complain. no one to get into any arguments with. It's just you and your personal agenda. the freedom is exhilarating. there's a misperception about people who are on their own that because they are alone, they must be lonely. But being alone and loneliness aren't the same states. Besides, there are so many tours and group activities available for travelers these days that you don't have to be by yourself your entire trip. I love food tours as a way to both meet fellow travelers and to taste local cuisines.
for discovery & inspiration
Our world has 195 countries spanning 6 continents and countless natural wonders across all 7. there are so many cultures and cities to explore and to experience. Travel gives you the opportunity to expand your mind and perspective. every trip leaves an impression and the experiences enrich your everyday life back home. To learn, to grow and to be inspired are some of the reasons why travel is so important to me.
